I was witness to multiple issues within the household around domestic abuse as a child. My Dad was an alcoholic and frequently violent and mentally abusive. As a family we all suffered because of it until my mum was able to take us away from him. I have struggled for a number of years with what I was personally out through, I am today able to put it into a variety of mediums.
Drain Me … Sustain You is based around the idea of being emotionally drained by someone close to you so they can feed their illness. It was a cathartic process as it reflects many of the issues I was going through at the time which resulted me getting help and getting into recovery.
This painting has been shown on CALM charity’s website to raise awareness for support needed to those suffering with bereavements or themselves suffering with suicidal thoughts. The need for awareness on domestic violence and how to find solutions is paramount. I know what it is like to be isolated in those situations and what damage can be done.
